Tooth Decay MOD Illustration
This picture is a MOD(Mechanism of Disease) illustration which shows how tooth decay occurs.
Tooth decay MOD: First, an enzyme called Glucansucrase splits the Sucrose into two monosaccharides: fructose and glucose. At this point, the fructose is discarded and the glucose is combined into a long chain. The long chain is glucans. The glucans create a sticky film as known as plaque. The plaque glues the bacteria to the teeth. The bacteria secrete acids and the acids erode the teeth.
By passing through the Glucansucrase along the arrows, the Sucrose is split into the fructose and the glucose. The transparency of the fructose expresses that the fructose is discarded after splitting. To show the combining of the glucose, the plus sign "+" is used. The human figure presents where the pain occurs in the body.
